The oldest historical monument in Dorohoi, a princely church consecrated in 1495 during the reign of Stephen the Great, featuring valuable frescoes and a votive painting unique in Moldavia.
The place of worship was consecrated in 1495 during the reign of Stephen the Great. Today, the "Saint Nicholas the Royal" Church stands as the oldest historical
monument and the primary tourist attraction in the Dorohoi area for visitors from both within the country and abroad. Built in the traditional Moldavian architectural
style, the edifice retains its original forms and walls intact, presenting itself as a monument rich in decorative detail.
The interior painting preserves frescoes of exceptional artistic value, attributed to the eras of either Stephen the Great or Petru Rareș.
Within the nave, the votive painting stands out, depicting Voivode Stephen, Lady Maria, Bogdan, Stephen the Younger, and his brother Petru.
The Royal Church in Dorohoi represents the only instance in Moldavia where the votive painting extends onto the southern wall;
Jesus is depicted on this wall rather than the western one—as is customary—while the founder and his family appear on the western wall,
their gazes directed from right to left.
